Rolling Duffels
Students and younger people have known the secret of traveling light and comfortably for years. The rest of the world is just catching on to this great idea. Duffel bags on wheels, or rolling duffel bags are lightweight and roomy. You can stuff a lot of clothing, incidentals, travel accessories and just stuff into these bags. They are very lightweight and unstructured. There’s always room to stuff another pair of shoes or shorts in one of these duffel bags. They come in easy-to-spot bright, fun colors.
Many of them have the good inline skate wheels and the locking push or pull handle. This allows you to wheel over a multitude of surfaces, from airline terminals to cobblestones. It really doesn’t matter if you’re going by train, bus or plane. The locking handle will let you push or pull the duffel bag as need be. Some of the models also have an add-a-bag strap letting you hook another smaller case or backpack to the front. In this way you can wheel two pieces conveniently with only one hand.
These wheeling duffel bags have certainly improved from the original models. Most of them will fold up flat so storing them away when not in use is easy. They can be slid underneath a bed or put up in back of a closet. They have compartments inside instead of just one big, empty hole to fill. Odds and ends can be packed in the zippered pockets inside. Some of them have floating dividers, so clothing can be separated or organized inside. Some of the rolling duffel bags have pockets on the outside for last minute items. Other models are “double decker” and zipper completely opens three quarters of the way down. This handy feature allows you to pack a lot of your shoes, or cosmetics, or dirty clothes away from the other items, almost like packing another case. You can also pack dressier clothes neatly on the bottom, and your more casual clothing on the top deck.
The newest models of the duffel bags on wheels open completely to pack. The zipper will unzip on both sides completely around to the bottom of the duffel. This means you can remove clothing without searching through the entire duffel bag. You can easily find an item and see exactly what’s packed by looking at the layers of clothing. This handy feature does away with the rummaging through the entire bag when you’re looking for one shirt or sweater. The clothes will stay as neat as when you first packed them. You also won’t have to unpack the duffel bag either, when staying only a few days in each location. Wonderful, for those “if it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium” tours! When you zipper the case up, it again becomes a duffel or round shape.
There’s a size duffel bag available for any trip you may be planning. Wheeled duffel bags are now available in the popular 22″ carry on luggage size. They also come in a 26″ size and the ever-popular 29″ and 30″ size. There’s also the “you know you can go overweight in this size” which is the 34″ duffel. Although these wheeled duffel bags are generally lighter than Pullman luggage, they can really be stuffed with a lot of shoes and clothing. Be sure to check with the airline you are using about their weight or size restrictions. You may have to pay overage charges if you go over their weight requirements. Portable luggage scales are one of the handiest travel accessories to have if you are concerned with overweight charges. Shoes and boots weigh a lot more than clothing.
You also want to avoid large bottles of shampoo and other toiletries that add to the weight of the case. You may not carry on to the plane more than a one-quart sized clear plastic bag with liquids and gels. The liquids must also be in three ounce or less bottles and jars and only one quart sized bag per person, called the three-one-one kit. The majority of your toiletries must be packed in your baggage. Pack your toiletries securely in plastic lined cases, as the wheeled duffel bags are unstructured. Casual travel is the best so have a wonderful trip!
